Out with the old in with the ReNew

WOW where did 2011 go? A lot has happened for me in 2011. God graced me with a beautiful new wife that not only helps me grow with the Lord but challenges me to do so threw testing my patients. With the new year here and everyone starting new diets, work outs, and many many other things and after some prayer time with the Lord I felt it was time to resurrect ReNewed. This is especially the time to start a new journey with the Lord, following Jesus and the Bible is not just for the Holidays.
Proverbs 16:9 says “In his heart a man plans his course but the Lord determines his steps.” (NIV)
The Lord knows your hearts desires Psalm 37:4 tells us “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (NIV) This year my goal as the main contributor to the ReNewed Ministry is to take a deep look into what the meaning of being a Christian is. Each and every Chirstian has room to grow.

Healing prayer

With just a look your way your pain and suffering can go away. More times than I could count this is in the Bible. Some are quick to give up when it comes to Prayer and asking God to heal us. In Acts 3 it tells of a man born with out the ability to walk. A man that sat outside the Temple named “Beautiful’ and begged for silver and gold. People were used to seeing the man as he was always there. One day Peter and John were entering into the Temple for prayer when the man asked them for money. Peter looked at the man said “Look at us” so the man did. Then Peter said “ I have no silver or gold, but what I do have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth walk” Taking him by the hand he helped the man who had been crippled all his life and helped him up. Instantly the man’s legs and feet became strong. He jumped to his feet and began to walk. Then he went into the temple courts, walking and jumping and praising God. The rest of the passage I will leave to you to read on your own. It is a amazing story of the grace God gives. That man had not prayed that he would walk. He was doing what he had done every day. He begged for money. God knows your desires before even you do. He knew that that man wanted to walk and so it was His will that Peter and John walked by that man that day. He was now a believer and spread the Word of God to all he met. Christ heals all. It may not be the way you wanted it to but it is still done.

It is not only physical healing that Christ heals. It is worry, and guilt for sins. It doesn’t matter what it is in life your are going through. The darkest hour in “this” life is the brightest day for Christ. 2 Corinthians 12:9 tells us “ My Grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” So you see it doesn’t matter. Give your problems to God. Let him carry the weight of your sins like He did carrying the Cross. Let your Sins be forgiven, put your worries in the palm of his hand for he will take them away. Another wonderful Scripture that tells of “a new you” is Romans 6:1 It tells that as we were baptized in Jesus Christ we were also baptized in his death. As as Christ was resurrected from death by God our Father we too were raised Born Again with out sin! Remember to thank God everyday for everything no matter if it’s good or bad. Be grateful for the bad and drive Satan back where he belongs.

Devotion

Its easy to be “Christian like” on Sundays. You go to church and pray, you give your tithing, you sing and kind of listen to what the Pastor is talking about hoping that he is done so you have enough time to fight traffic home before the big game or race starts.  It doesn’t make you anything more than human to be distracted by what’s going on here on earth.

To walk the Christian life and do things the way God wants is not a 1 hour a week scheduled activity. Its everyday, its all day as much as you possibly can.  I’m sure most of you pray before eating at home. How often do you do it when you are out to dinner with your family. If you don’t, Why? Are you worried that people may look at you while your head is down giving God thanks for providing you and blessing you with the money to be able to go out and eat? Do you just forget?  Matthew 10:33 says “ if you deny me before man, I will deny you before my Father” Don’t be embarrassed, you may find you’re not the only one doing it. You may remind someone else to do the same thing.

2 Timothy 2:12 “if we endure, we shall also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us.” A relationship with God is one that will never end, it never fades on his side. Gods love is never-ending, his Grace is sufficient. God will always forgive no matter what you do, no matter what you say. The love of Our God is the greatest love we will ever know while on this earth.

For such a time as this…

Esther 4:14 For if you keep silent at this time, relief and deliverance will rise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

Sometimes it amazes me how things come together.  Our position in life, our finances, even our forgetfulness or laziness can all be used by God at the precise timing and for the exact purpose He has called us to. Queen Esther lived this out when she had been chosen as queen during a time of great struggle for her Jewish people. One of the king’s officials was trying to wipe out all of the Jewish population and Esther’s uncle urged her to make a plea to the king on their behalf.  In this time the king had to extend an invitation before anyone could enter into his court.  The uninvited could be punished by death unless the king extended his scepter to grant them immunity.

Esther was justifiably nervous to approach the king and face death, but her uncle reminded her that she didn’t just wind up in this high position.  It may very well be that God placed her there for the exact purpose of approaching the king to plea for the lives of the Jews.  It was no coincidence that she had been shown such great favor by the king.  Esther knew Mordecai was right and decided to make the move, knowing that she may die in the process, but confident that this is why she was there at this time in this place. The story ends well and Esther is not killed for entering the king’s court uninvited and her people are saved. What an amazing story and God orchestrated it all.

I’ve seen so many times in my own life that God has worked some little thing that seemed bad, or maybe even really good, into His plan for another purpose.  As an illustration, I’d like to share my recent experience.  This week I started a ministerial internship at a church that is not my own, but under a pastor who used to lead at my church a while back.  In discussing with him what my responsibilities will be, he spoke a lot about the need for me to counsel new believers about baptism.  Could it be a coincidence, I thought, that I just heard an entire sermon devoted to the subject of baptism last Sunday, a day that I was sick and could have stayed home but “felt” like I should go anyway?  Could it be that I was meant to show up to that service despite my sickness just to prepare me for this role?

Then, when I asked the pastor if they had extra clothes for people to change into to get baptized, he said they had “some” but not much.  I immediately thought that I should donate some clothes to the church for this purpose.  Once home, I began searching for some T-shirts and athletic shorts to donate. I wasn’t finding very many and then I remembered why.  I had already gone through my clothes and put much of my stuff to donate in a duffel bag.  For whatever reason I either kept forgetting to drop it off and the Salvation Army or I was just too lazy.  Months have now passed and that bag is still sitting in my garage.  I opened it up and found it almost full of clothes that are perfect for wearing in the baptismal pool.  I hadn’t taken them to donate because, unbeknown to me, they were needed for “such a time as this”.

It’s theses small things that are a testimony to just how much God is at work in our lives, using even the most seemingly insignificant details to bring about His purpose.  Don’t ever doubt that God is working in you and through you.  Sometimes even when He doesn’t let you know it, He’s doing something bigger than you could imagine in your life.

Tis the Season

Well thanksgiving has come and gone and that can only mean one this… Get out the bigger pants. Not really but it does mean the Christmas shopping season is amoung us. People everywhere were up and at it early on “black friday”. Lets not forget while we are out the reason for the season. Its about Christ and celebrating his birth and his life. Not that we shouldnt everyday but on this day for sure. My family is starting a new tradidtion this year. In place of pies we are making a cake. A birthday cake for our Lord and Savior on his birthday. I encourage you to do the same thing. Have a cake light a candle (not 2010 of them) and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus.

Mary, a virgin, was living in Galilee of Nazareth and was engaged to be married to Joseph, a Jewish carpenter. An angel visited her and explained to her that she would conceive a son by the power of the Holy Spirit. She would carry and give birth to this child and she would name him Jesus.
At first Mary was afraid and troubled by the angel’s words. Being a virgin, Mary questioned the angel, “How will this be?” The angel explained that the child would be God’s own Son and, therefore, “nothing is impossible with God.” Humbled and in awe, Mary believed the angel of the Lord and rejoiced in God her Savior.

A Clean Heart

Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. (ESV)

How does one become a new creation in Christ? How do we become more like the One who created us? These questions may seem simple but there’s plenty to be said on the matter.

King David knew about renewal. After having committed a sin against God with Bathsheba, he was confronted by the prophet Nathan and repented, begging God to wash him clean. David prayed that his sins would be taken away from him and that his relationship with the Lord would be restored.

We may not all have Nathans in our lives who will boldly confront us with our sin, but we do, as Christians, have the indwelling Holy Spirit who reminds us when we’ve done wrong. We know when we’re in need of repentance, though we sometimes don’t want to admit it. We feel the conviction He brings because we recognize His voice.

The important thing to note in Psalm 51 is not David’s action that leads toward renewal. It’s not because he repents necessarily that he is restored. What needs to be noted is David’s acknowledgement that it is God’s action that brings about the renewal and restoration. It’s not our work that causes us to gain a clean heart, it’s the work of the Holy Spirit in us.

How do I know who’s right?!

It can be intimidating as a new believer to bombarded with all of the views of Christianity at once.  The fact is, even though many people carry the title Christian, not all of us agree on theology and doctrine.  Just walk into a Christian book store and you’ll see thousands of books on a variety of topics, many of them contradicting each other.  So if you’re new to the faith, it’s not unusual to be confused when you try to figure out who’s right.  I’m going to go over a few things you can use to consider what is right doctrine when it comes to Christian belief.

  1. Does the belief, teaching, or practice line up with what the Bible says?  God’s Word is holy and inspired by God himself.  Within the pages of the Scriptures there is no flaw.  If something that’s being taught goes against what God has said, consider it false teaching or at the very least look deeper into it.
  2. Does the belief, teaching, or practice glorify God?  If God would be ashamed of what a Christian is doing in His name, consider it outside His will.
  3. Does the belief, teaching, or practice emphasize the preeminence of Jesus Christ?  In other words, is there anything in this doctrine that places Jesus at a level lower than being God or that places something higher than Him in importance?  The core belief of Christians is that Jesus is God’s Son who came to earth to pay the price for our sins by dying on the cross, rose bodily from the dead, and lives even now.  If any belief takes away from that, it’s not Christian.

This list is not exhaustive, but it’s a start.  What’s important is that no matter who is teaching you about God, you should not take it as fact until you’ve examined the Scriptures (like the Bereans in Acts 17:11) to see if it’s true. Pray and ask the Lord to show you His truth as well.

Answers

How many times have you asked God for something, whether it be a sign that things will get better or asking for something. Have you ever heard the answer? I’ve had people ask me how I have heard Gods answers to my prayers. Sometimes its hard to understand when He speaks to you. Some people have heard a voice, some have come across the answers in church or scripture they come across. For me most of the time it’s a feeling. I recently asked God for something. It wasn’t money or anything like that. It was something that would bring me years of happiness. With in hours I found what I was looking for. I have prayed about it because it is something that is going to take time and work to get to where I want to be with this situation. Prayer is the most POWERFULL tool God has given us. His Grace is the biggest gift. The power of prayer can make life’s problems so much easier to handle. While some situations may be a “quick fix” others, like the one I am going thru take time and work from all people involved and from God. Life is not easy, it wasn’t designed to be. You will always have bumps in the road, you will always have temptations to do the wrong thing. The trick to life is looking to God for the answers or direction on how to deal with life. There was a time in my life when God wasn’t in it. I didn’t pray, I didn’t read the Bible or any devotions, I just removed my faith from my life. I thought I had control. I quickly realized that was not so true. I didn’t do it on purpose I just stopped praying. I stopped asking him for guidance. Life quickly became to much to deal with on my own and as quickly as I stopped I put my self right back into it. Amazingly things began to fall into place once again. Life was a little bit easier to deal with, and I was for the first time in a long time at peace inside with little to no worries. Always seek first the Word of God.

Hearing from God

Sometimes God speaks through dreams. Other times He may speak to us through signs or other people. But mostly, God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible. Many of the things we seek answers to are already addressed in the Bible, if we would just look. I don’t know how many times I’ve struggled with something only to later see something in the Bible that I could have relied on as an answer. Had I just prayed and asked God to show me what it is He wanted me to know about the situation and then searched His Word, I would have found the answer. That’s not to say that I went without an answer, I did hear from God in one of the many ways He speaks to me.

I find that the best way to start my day is reading what God has passed down, listening for what He has to tell me specifically. So many times I begin the day with a great outlook because of something the Lord said in His letter to us.

Never give up

This devotion is not the one I set out to write this week. Today has been one of those day that nothing went right. I had a bad day at work, after work I was working on my boat the rest of the afternoon till I could no longer see at night, still nothing worked the way I had it planned. Then just as I was getting this weeks entry finished up the program on my computer decided it wanted to close and I lost all I had worked on. As I sat there asking myself what else could happen I almost gave up on today. I messaged Matt and told him what happened and asked him if he could write something for me that I just didn’t have the energy to do this all over again. As soon as he said yeah no problem a new feeling came over me that I just had to redo this myself. For as long as I finished this simple task something would have gone right for me today. Its not always the BIG things in life that can give you gratification. Like with anything else in life something small can mean just as much as something big that you started and completed. Had I chosen to not rewrite this I felt that I would have let God down. This is my calling for now. Its more than just a few words that are typed and uploaded to a website that people read (but you never comment hint hint). In Luke 18:1 Jesus told his Disciples a parable that showed them they should pray and never give up. Much like the lesson that God taught Job, Had Job given up and stopped having faith he would have faced certain death. Keep the faith and never give up..
