Ephesians 6:16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one
What sustains you when you face trials in your life? Is it the good works you’ve done? The good books you’ve read? The respect you’ve earned or the status you’ve achieved in your job? How about the possessions you’ve acquired? Or is it faith that keeps you going?
In spiritual warfare, there are offensive measures and there are defensive measures. We are proactive in some ways, and reactive in others. It’s no secret that the enemy of our souls is prone to attack when we are gaining momentum. It should be expected. When that happens, we’ve got to be ready to put up our shields to counter him.
Satan’s attacks can come in the form of doubts, depression, failures, trials, or any number of other struggles. When we’re going through them, they hurt, but faith is effective at keeping him from succeeding.
Faith isn’t just about looking ahead. Sometimes it’s about looking back at how the Lord has kept us up to this point and remember that He always will. Recalling all that He’s done for us is very often the thing that keeps the enemy’s attacks from being effective. Knowing that He’s on our side is very comforting. Keep your shield ready.
Ephesians 6:12-13 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.
Who are your enemies? Do you have people that always seem to stand in your way? People who just don’t like you? They’re not the real enemy.
There’s a whole lot going on in this world that we don’t see with our eyes. The spiritual forces at work are the ones to be concerned about. The enemy of your soul, Satan, has his evil set against you and against God’s will being carried out. He’ll stop at nothing to win. But in the end, he can’t win.
Satan, even with his armies of darkness, is no match for the King of Kings. The omnipresent, omniscient, all-powerful Creator wins. That doesn’t stop the evil one from trying though. He’s after you and anyone else who professes to follow Christ. We’re soldiers in a war and it’s important that we are armed properly.
We stand firm in this war because we know the Lord is on our side. We know that we’re armed and ready to take on the spiritual forces that oppose us because we’ve been equipped by God himself. We can walk bravely into battle, knowing that He has already won the war. His victory on the cross is our victory. Stand firm.

Ephesians 6:10-11 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.
Life is not always what it seems to be. There are battles going on that we don’t see, schemes being put into play, and even protection we’re not aware of.
We’re in the middle of a war and it’s to be taken seriously. There’s no getting around the fact that God’s enemy, our enemy, Satan, is at work to destroy the plans of our Creator. We can’t stand by idly and allow him to take out families, marriages, ministries, and ultimately souls. We need to open our eyes.
The thing is, this isn’t an evenly matched war. Satan is not the evil version of God. He doesn’t have the might of God, the knowledge or the abilities of God. He’s incapable of victory. The strength of the Lord is our strength. If we take up the armor He’s provided for us, we have victory. We will prevail against all attacks.
We’ll talk more about the armor we’ve been given over the next few days. In the meantime, consider what it means to be on God’s side during this war.
