The Lesson of the Fig Tree

Luke 21:29-33   And he told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Signs.  We’re all looking for signs.  The same was true in Jesus’ day.  The Pharisees, the Saducees, the disciples, the crowds, all looking for signs and wonders.  They wanted signs that Jesus was really the Messiah, we want signs that He’s really there.  They wanted to see miracles, we pray for riches and fortunes.

But Jesus was hesitant to gives signs to the people, even His own disciples.  Even the famed “wars and rumors of wars” warning wasn’t so much of a sign as it was Jesus making a point that they weren’t signs of the end.  This, He said, was only the beginning. He was telling them that they should always be ready for His return, at all times.

Mark 13: 7 And when you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. This must take place, but the end is not yet.8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. These are but the beginning of the birth pains.

There are some actual signs that Jesus tells of (Mark 13:24-27 for example), but He encourages His followers to learn a lesson from the fig tree.  “As soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near”(Mark 13:28).  He tells them, and us, to interpret the signs appropriately.  Do not look at the fact that this world is passing away and despair over it.  It’s a sign that the Son is returning.  Don’t lose hope because these things are happening, because they need to happen.  It’s all the more reason TO have hope!

The end of all things

Revelation 21:6 And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the spring of the water of life without payment.

Do you ever fear the future?  Are you afraid to give any thought to what will happen to this world when the end comes?  Are you thinking right now as you read this that the end times already have come?

The Bible has a lot to say about how things end, some of them may seem a little unnerving because of their unfamiliar nature (flying creatures with eyes on their wings and whatnot), but there’s great news about it all.  God is the author of all things, from creation to His appointed end time.

There’s nothing to worry about!  Nothing ends apart from the way God wants it to come to completion.  None of it ought to scare us.  Even though there’s talk of earthquakes and the sky becoming dark, wars, and famines, we know who is in control of it all.  We know who wrote the ending before the beginning.

God is good, He is in control, He is perfect in all His ways.  He will bring all things to their necessary completion for your life, for my life, and for the world as we know it.  Keeping in mind the nature and character of the Father alleviates fear of the future.

The Day of the Lord Will Come

Jesus is coming

2 Peter 3:1-13  1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,t not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

What should we expect when Jesus returns?  Will there be a great disaster on the earth that wipes out everything?  Will the entire world come to an end before Jesus comes back?  Will He rapture His people before any disasters?

The main point that can be reached through studying the Scriptures is that there is one thing we can expect when Jesus returns:  Jesus.  We won’t know when it will be, what the circumstances will be leading up to His arrival, and Jesus himself even spoke of the timing of His return being unknown to any but the Father.  When the time is right, according to God’s standards, the Father will send the Son back here to reign.  It may seem like it’s taking forever to us, but His timing is perfect.  To God, who is eternal, there is no reason to rush, and He’s never late.

The fact that we don’t know when Jesus will return is not cause for discouragement.  It is cause, though, for us to always be ready at all times.  We should be living out the lives He’s called us to live, carrying out His will here on earth.  We can’t sit around waiting, He’s given us a mission.  He expects us to be fulfilling that mission until He returns.  While we expect Him, let’s prepare the way for Him.
