The Day of the Lord Will Come

Jesus is coming

2 Peter 3:1-13  1 This is now the second letter that I am writing to you, beloved. In both of them I am stirring up your sincere mind by way of reminder,2 that you should remember the predictions of the holy prophets and the commandment of the Lord and Savior through your apostles,3 knowing this first of all, that scoffers will come in the last days with scoffing, following their own sinful desires.4 They will say, “Where is the promise of his coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all things are continuing as they were from the beginning of creation.”5 For they deliberately overlook this fact, that the heavens existed long ago, and the earth was formed out of water and through water by the word of God,6 and that by means of these the world that then existed was deluged with water and perished.7 But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly. 8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.9 The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,t not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11 Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness,12 waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!13 But according to his promise we are waiting for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

What should we expect when Jesus returns?  Will there be a great disaster on the earth that wipes out everything?  Will the entire world come to an end before Jesus comes back?  Will He rapture His people before any disasters?

The main point that can be reached through studying the Scriptures is that there is one thing we can expect when Jesus returns:  Jesus.  We won’t know when it will be, what the circumstances will be leading up to His arrival, and Jesus himself even spoke of the timing of His return being unknown to any but the Father.  When the time is right, according to God’s standards, the Father will send the Son back here to reign.  It may seem like it’s taking forever to us, but His timing is perfect.  To God, who is eternal, there is no reason to rush, and He’s never late.

The fact that we don’t know when Jesus will return is not cause for discouragement.  It is cause, though, for us to always be ready at all times.  We should be living out the lives He’s called us to live, carrying out His will here on earth.  We can’t sit around waiting, He’s given us a mission.  He expects us to be fulfilling that mission until He returns.  While we expect Him, let’s prepare the way for Him.

Watch Yourselves

Jesus is Coming

Luke 21:34-36  34 “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap.35 For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth.36 But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Are you ready?  When Jesus returns it will be sudden and unexpected, we won’t have time to get ready once things begin.  Are you ready for it?  Or are you caught up in the cares of this life?

It’s so easy to get distracted from what really matters.  There are things all around us to keep us occupied.  If it’s not the TV or the internet, it’s all of the apps that are now available on our phones.  We literally never have to go without some form of entertainment or distraction.  So how do we keep our eyes on Him, awaiting His return?

The answer to that question lies in Romans 12:2.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect

We can’t be caught up in the things of this world if we’re going to be ready for Christ’s return.  That means being transformed by the renewal of our minds.  That simply means trading in our understanding of the world for God’s.  Looking at things from His point of view.  If we do this, we won’t find the distracting things of this world appealing at all and we’ll look to the Lord’s business.
